There is a major difference between “That was stupid of me” and “I could have put that more elegantly.” Would you rather identify yourself as stupid or elegant?
There is a critical difference between being struck by lightning vs. a lightning bug. Words matter!
Crisis negotiation must engage all concerned parties toward a peaceful, elegant solution; not a stupid, violent end. The difference lies in language choices. As part of the Police Negotiation
Cadre, it is your responsibility to monitor your own language choices and to learn what you can about a citizen in crisis from their manner of communication.
High-stakes negotiating is like walking on fire. Like fire walkers, police negotiators must maintain a heightened mental state to avoid getting burned. But maintaining such a state day-to-day wears on both mental and physical health. The challenge is to remain calm and protect yourself from the detriments of stress.
A related challenge is to protect other parties to the negotiation. It is imperative to choose the right words to get desired results. Then to infuse those words with an energy that accurately
projects your meaning and purpose. The difference is as profound as being struck by lightning versus a lightning bug!
Effective negotiation is a dynamic process of reading and projecting both verbal and nonverbal communications. Dr. Kweethai will walk you through the fire of conflict; emerging calm and peaceful.
This workshop has been designed specifically for the Hong Kong Police Negotiation Cadre; professionals engaged in dispute resolution and crisis management.
Negotiation in crisis situations puts as much stress on the body as long, steady distance training (like running, swimming or biking), but with none of the benefits. Imagine being able to relax
your mind and body within just a few minutes, enabling you to continue your work with energy and focus. But that is only a short-term benefit. Imagine releasing the negativity you have
accumulated via close contact with people in crisis. With a few simple strategies you can retain health of mind, body and spirit despite daily doses of severe stress.
Hypnosis is mostly relaxation and focus. For people who work in fragmented, frenetic, stressful circumstances, that would be enough benefit to make this workshop valuable.
An added benefit is that, with regular practice, you can learn to center yourself, to maintain compassion yet avoid being sucked into the vortex of other peoples’ trauma, drama or crisis.
Negotiation relies heavily on language choice. People in crisis use language that reflects what they think of themselves. The language a negotiator uses in response can either reinforce a negative sense of self or gently apply the brakes to the downward spiral, opening the person in pain and despair to more positive alternatives.
Learn to revise negative expressions and actions into positive alternatives. But do not attempt the heavy lifting all by yourself. As you help revise someone’s language toward the positive, be
prepared to be amazed at positive alternatives arising from their subconscious mind.
Learn how to convert avoidance strategies to approach strategies (getting what you want instead of simply avoiding what you do not want). If you don’t what you want, it doesn’t matter what you
get. For most people in crisis, they simply want the downward spiral to end. A key negotiation strategy is to help such persons conceive an upward strategy; a way out of their pain and suffering.
It all starts with language.
